In this day and age, virtual reality gaming is really making its mark! The creators of the virtual reality headset, Oculus Rift, were able to bring in a whole lot of cash in just a few hours after they started a Kickstarter campaign to raise money for the production of this new and innovative VR gaming device. After all, perhaps one of the reasons why this type of technology is not already out there is because it had previously been too cost-prohibitive. The good news now is that with Kickstarter, the team was able to bring in all the money that they needed to get started!

What is the Oculus Rift?

The Oculus Rift is actually a 3D headset for virtual reality gaming. It has a screen for each eye, which gives the viewer the ability to see a lot of different angles. It also has built-in sensors that allow them to look around and have the lens ‘act’ as their own eyes. It will definitely prove to make a huge difference in the gaming industry. After all, to this day, there have been many technological advances, but this is sure to be one that will really make history!

How the Founders Do It

Many of the top people in the PC gaming industry would only give credit to Palmer Luckey for being able to do something so noteworthy. In fact, Gabe Newell states: “It looks incredibly exciting, if anybody’s going to tackle this set of hard problems, we think that Luckey is going to do it.” This is a statement that Newell made during one of the promotional videos that were made for the Oculus Rift project. People had faith in them, and they were able to pull through with their Kickstarter campaign.

How Well Did the Kickstarter Campaign Work?

While it has already been noted that the Oculus Rift Kickstarter campaign was successful in reaching its goal in just a few hours, it is important to take a closer look at how they were able to achieve this. When the campaign was published, they already had $411,103, with only 1,668 people backing the product. This is unheard of in many cases, but it really seemed to work for them! It goes to show that the Oculus Rift is a well-backed product because by pledging $300, you are able to receive the Oculus Rift, and a copy of the Doom 3: BFG Edition – which was going to be the first game that would be compatible with the headset. The initial backers of this product averaged around $250 each, which means that a majority of them were giving enough to get the product when it hits the market.

As you can see, Kickstarter proves to be a great way to successfully raise funds for your startup. The key is to make sure that you set up a successful campaign that brings in a whole lot of attention and backers.
