While the Facebook acquisition of Oculus back in early 2014 created quite a stir within the VR community, we have since then seen the benefits of the partnership begin to unfold with Oculus greatly expanding its team of talent with massive hiring, and an abundant amount of resources at its disposal for the development of the Oculus Rift, and future virtual reality technology. However, many still wonder what are Facebook’s ultimate ambitions for VR.

During the recent hour-long Q&A session, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed more insight into his ambitious plans involving virtual reality, when a Facebook user posted a question asking Zuckerberg what his vision was for Oculus.

“Our mission to give people the power to experience anything,” Zuckerberg replied. “Even if you don’t have the ability to travel somewhere, or to be with someone in person, or even if something is physically impossible to build in our analog world, the goal is to help build a medium that will give you the ability to do all of these things you might not otherwise be able to do.”

“This will be incredibly powerful as a communication medium as well. Just like we capture photos and videos today and then share them on the internet to let others experience them too, we’ll be able to capture whole 3D scenes and create new environments and then share those with people as well,” Zuckerberg added. “It will be pretty wild.”

At last month’s F8 conference, Zuckerberg revealed plans for 360-degree content that will be coming to Facebook with support for the Oculus Rift.
